What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make purposeful choices about what they read and write. They connect their own interests to challenging class texts, questions, and topics, then explain why those choices fit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose appropriately challenging texts and give clear reasons for their choices. Their writing shows both genuine interest and a specific connection to a class text, question, or topic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a text only because it looks easy or matches a favorite genre. They may also name a personal connection without explaining how the text relates to the class topic.

How to Assess It

Provide three short text options. Ask students to choose one, explain its personal and academic value, then write a 100-word response connecting it to the current unit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out book covers and summaries, then have students sort them by personal interest, academic relevance, both, or neither.

  2. Ask students to write: Which text would you choose for our current unit, and what makes it worth your time?

  3. Play Text Match by pairing student interest cards with article, poem, essay, and novel summaries that also fit the unit topic.

  4. Have students choose a current news article tied to the unit and write a response for a school newspaper audience.
