What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes. They use each part’s meaning, plus sentence context, to form and verify a likely definition.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can mark trans, port, and ation in transportation, then explain the meaning of each part. The student combines those meanings and checks the result against the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any first syllable as a prefix, such as reading uncle as un plus cle. They may give the root’s meaning but ignore how an affix changes it. They may also infer a meaning that does not fit the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In “The witness’s misinterpretation caused confusion,” divide misinterpretation into meaningful parts, define each part, and explain the whole word.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cards labeled trans, port, tele, graph, pre, and able; students build words, record each part, and define the result.
Students discuss how inspect, spectator, and telescope connect to seeing, then identify each root and explain the meaning shift.
Play word-part dominoes: students match prefixes, roots, and suffixes, then earn a point by giving a sensible definition.
Students collect five unfamiliar words from science or social studies texts, mark their parts, and test inferred meanings in a dictionary.
