What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose grade-level texts that connect to their interests or current class topics. They read those texts and create writing that fits a personal or academic purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student independently selects a grade-level text that matches a personal interest or class topic. The student reads with purpose and writes a clear, relevant response or related text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose only the shortest or easiest text instead of one that fits their interest or class topic. They may think academic texts are limited to textbooks or write without connecting to the selected topic.

How to Assess It

Offer three short grade-level passages tied to the current unit. Students choose one, read it, then write four sentences explaining a key idea and a personal connection.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out six books and articles, then have students sort them by personal interest, class relevance, or both.

  2. Ask students to write: Which class topic would you like to read more about, and what kind of text would you choose?

  3. Play Text Match by giving teams topic cards and text summaries to pair, with one spoken reason for each match.

  4. Have students choose a school issue, read a related article, and write a short message proposing one realistic change.
