What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose words and phrases that shape how a particular audience responds. They adjust language to match a clear purpose, such as persuading, informing, entertaining, or prompting questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select words that fit their audience and goal. They can explain how a word or phrase might make readers feel, think, question, or act.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose strong words without considering how those words affect a specific reader. They may also confuse purpose with topic or use the same tone for every audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students a plain sentence: “Our class needs more reading time.” Ask them to rewrite it to persuade the principal, then underline two purposeful word choices.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word cards such as demanded, requested, and suggested, then have them arrange the words from most forceful to least forceful.
Ask students to write two versions of a playground request, one for a friend and one for the principal, then compare word choices.
Play Audience Switch: students draw an audience and purpose card, revise one sentence, and earn a point by explaining one word choice.
Examine a school flyer or cereal advertisement, circle persuasive words, and discuss how those words guide the audience toward a decision.
