What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose precise language based on who will read the piece and what they want that reader to think or do. They revise wording to create effects such as trust, urgency, curiosity, or concern.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can rewrite the same message for two audiences and make noticeably different language choices. The student can identify key words and explain the likely reader reaction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think persuasive wording means exaggerating or using emotional language everywhere. They may also assume longer words sound more convincing, even when those words weaken clarity or miss the audience.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write a two-sentence message persuading the principal to keep the library open late. Underline three words and label the reaction each should create.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups word cards and have them build three versions of one request that create trust, urgency, or curiosity.

  2. Write two versions of a phone policy message, one for students and one for families, then explain three word choices.

  3. Play Tone Swap by drawing audience and purpose cards, then revising a neutral sentence to match both.

  4. Revise a school lunch announcement for students and parents, then compare how word choice changes for each audience.
