What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose words and phrases based on who will read their writing and why. They use word choice to guide a reader’s feelings, ideas, actions, or questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name their audience and purpose before writing. They choose specific words that create a planned response, then explain how one word or phrase supports that purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer or fancier words always make writing stronger. They may choose words they like without considering how a particular reader might react.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Write two sentences inviting first graders to a class pet show. Underline words chosen to make them feel excited.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs phrase cards, such as “cold rain” and “icy rain,” and have them sort each by the feeling it creates.
Ask students to write two playground signs, one that welcomes kindergarteners and one that persuades second graders to follow a rule.
Play Audience Switch by drawing an audience card, then revising the same message for a principal, friend, or younger child.
Create a poster inviting families to reading night, using three words or phrases that make the event sound enjoyable.
