Common Misconceptions

Students may think longer words are always better than clear, precise words. They may add many adjectives without improving meaning. They may explain a word alone instead of considering its sentence and context.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “The puppy streaked across the yard and spotted a squirrel.” What does “streaked” suggest? Replace “spotted” with a more vivid verb.
