What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create true or made-up stories through speaking, writing, drawing, or mixed media. They also make sense of stories by identifying characters, setting, event order, and key details.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student creates a focused narrative with characters, a setting, ordered events, and relevant details. As an audience member, the student can retell the story and explain which details shaped its meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list events without building a clear story. They may leave out details that help an audience understand who, where, when, and why.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of an abandoned backpack. Ask students to write a six-sentence story, then have a partner identify the setting, main event, and ending.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a bag with three objects, and have them arrange the objects to plan and orally tell a story.

  2. Ask students to write about a time something unexpected happened, including what they thought, felt, and did.

  3. Play a story-chain game where students draw character, setting, and problem cards, then add one connected event at a time.

  4. Have students interview a family member about a memorable day, then turn the interview notes into a short narrative.
