What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose an order and text features that help a reader follow their message. They use headings, numbered steps, paragraphs, captions, or comparison sections to match the purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can organize a story, explanation, opinion, or set of directions in a clear way. The student selects useful features and explains how they help the intended reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students may put ideas in the order they thought of them rather than an order that helps the reader. They may add headings, captions, or lists as decoration without connecting them to the purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students notes about planting a seed. Ask them to create a how-to page with a title, numbered steps, one caption, and one sentence explaining an organization choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cut-apart sentences and feature cards from an animal report, then have them build a page and justify each placement.

  2. Compare two versions of a cafeteria notice and ask, "Which is easier for students to use, and what makes it clearer?"

  3. Play Purpose Match by pairing writing-purpose cards with structure cards such as sequence, description, cause and effect, or compare and contrast.

  4. Examine a school menu, game directions, or museum map, then list the features that help a reader find information quickly.
