What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students arrange ideas so a reader can follow them. They choose a simple form, such as a labeled diagram, list, story sequence, or how-to page, and add helpful features.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose an order and page features that fit the reason for writing. The finished piece uses a title, labels, numbered steps, or sequence words to guide the reader.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may put story events or directions out of order. They may add headings, labels, or pictures that look interesting but do not help the reader.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to create a four-step page explaining how to wash hands. Require a title, numbered steps, and one labeled picture.

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart a familiar how-to text, have pairs reorder the steps, then add numbers and match each step to a picture.
Read two versions of the same message, then discuss which format helps the reader more and write one reason.
Play Feature Match by placing cards labeled title, caption, label, or number on the correct sample pages.
Examine a cafeteria menu, then create a class snack menu organized with headings, item names, and prices for classmates.
