What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose an order that helps readers follow the message. They use features such as titles, headings, numbered steps, labels, and pictures to fit the purpose and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can organize a story, explanation, or set of directions in a clear order. The student can add a title, heading, list, caption, or labeled picture that helps the intended reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students may place ideas in the order they think of them instead of an order that helps the reader. They may add headings, lists, or pictures that look appealing but do not support the purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students four picture-supported sentences about washing hands. Ask them to put the sentences in order, add a title, and choose one helpful text feature.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students sort sentence strips from a how-to text, glue them in order, then add numbered steps and a labeled drawing.

  2. Read two versions of a class announcement and ask students which is easier to use and what the writer changed.

  3. Play Feature Match by pairing purpose cards, such as inform or entertain, with titles, headings, lists, captions, and story openings.

  4. Create a classroom lost-and-found notice with a clear title, grouped details, and a labeled picture for younger readers.
