What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spot common affixes and connect them to nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. They use the affix and sentence context to work out meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can find an affix in an unfamiliar word and connect it to a likely part of speech. They use that clue with sentence context to explain the word’s meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every word ending in ly is an adverb, even words like friendly. They may name the suffix correctly but ignore the sentence when deciding the word’s meaning or job.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Maya spoke softly during the play.” Underline the suffix in softly, name its part of speech, and explain what softly means.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort word cards ending in ly, ful, less, and ness into labeled part-of-speech groups, then check each word in a sentence.
Ask students to explain how adding ness to kind changes both the word’s meaning and its job in a sentence.
Play Affix Match by pairing base-word cards with suffix cards, then earning points for naming the new word’s part of speech.
Collect affixed words from classroom directions, menus, or product labels, then identify each word’s suffix, part of speech, and meaning.
