What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name the author and identify the voice speaking in a story, poem, or informational text. They use words, pronouns, and other clues to explain whether the author and speaker are the same person or different people.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can point to the author’s name and name or describe the voice speaking in the text. The student can cite a word or detail showing that the author and speaker are different.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a character or narrator as the author. They may assume the word “I” always refers to the author. Some confuse the person reading aloud with the voice inside the text.

How to Assess It

Display a short poem spoken by an animal and include the author’s name. Ask students to name the author, describe the speaker, and copy one clue that supports their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a poem, an author card, and a speaker card, then have them place each card beside evidence for that role.

  2. Read a poem spoken by the moon and ask, “Who wrote it, who is speaking, and what clue proves they are different?”

  3. Play Author or Speaker by reading clue cards such as “wrote the book” or “tells the story” while students hold up role cards.

  4. Create a class safety poster with a talking crossing sign, then label the student writer as author and the sign as speaker.
