What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare to read by previewing, setting a purpose, asking questions, or predicting. While reading, they check understanding, clarify confusion, and adjust ideas, then summarize or respond afterward.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a strategy that fits the text and their purpose. They notice when meaning breaks down, reread or use context, then explain the main idea with supporting details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a prediction as a guess that never needs changing. They may think rereading means they failed, or that remembering one detail proves they understood the whole text.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and three boxes labeled before, during, and after. Ask them to record a prediction, show one place they reread, and write the main idea.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky notes to mark a prediction, a confusing part, a helpful clue, and the main idea in a short nonfiction book.
Read a story aloud, then ask: Which strategy helped you understand the problem, and what words or pictures helped?
Play Strategy Match by having students match text problems, such as an unknown word or missed detail, with useful strategy cards.
Give students a school lunch menu and ask them to find one meal, explain their choice, and name the reading strategy they used.
