What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide why they are reading and choose a small goal. As they read, they check whether the text makes sense and try another approach when it does not.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names a clear reason for reading and sets a small goal. While reading, the student notices confusion and uses a helpful strategy, such as rereading, checking a picture, or reading ahead.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think finishing the page means they understood it. They may choose a strategy without checking whether it cleared up the confusion.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one confusing sentence. Ask, “What is your reading goal, where did understanding break down, and what will you try?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short passage and sticky notes; students mark one confusing spot, then reread, inspect the picture, or read ahead.
Ask students to explain, “How did you know the text stopped making sense, and what helped you understand it?”
Play Fix-Up Strategy Match by pairing reading problems with cards labeled reread, slow down, check the picture, or read ahead.
Before reading school directions or a lunch menu, have students name their purpose and one detail they need to find.
