What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make choices about what to read or write, gather useful materials, and begin work with limited teacher prompting. They use familiar strategies and tools before asking for help.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose suitable books, topics, and tools without waiting for step-by-step directions. They keep working through small problems, use classroom resources, and ask a specific question when support is needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think working on their own means never asking for help. They may also wait for the teacher to choose a book, give a topic, spell every word, or solve each problem.
How to Assess It
- Give students 10 minutes to choose a familiar reading or writing task, gather needed tools, and begin. Ask them to name one choice they made and one tool they used.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a tool station with bookmarks, word walls, dictionaries, paper, and checklists, then have students select materials for an independent task.
Ask students to write: What can I try when reading or writing gets hard before I ask the teacher?
Play Tool Match by giving task cards, such as spelling a word or choosing a book, and having students select a helpful resource.
Have students create a classroom sign, lunch note, or book recommendation by choosing the format, materials, and words they need.
