What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make purposeful choices about what and how they read and write. They set goals, select strategies, track their progress, and decide when to revise or ask for support.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose suitable texts, tools, and strategies without waiting for step-by-step directions. They set goals, monitor their progress, seek specific help when needed, and explain how their choices improved their work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think working independently means never asking for help or using feedback. They may also choose tasks without a clear reason, abandon difficult texts, or submit first drafts without revising.

How to Assess It

Give students a short text and writing prompt, then ask them to choose one reading strategy and one revision step. Collect a brief note explaining each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a choice table with three texts, annotation tools, and response formats, then have students select and justify their own path.

  2. Ask students to write: What do you do when reading or writing becomes difficult, and which strategy helps you continue?

  3. Use strategy cards during independent work, and have students earn a point when they select, apply, and explain a useful strategy.

  4. Have students plan a real email, review, or request by choosing the audience, format, drafting tool, and revision method themselves.
