What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make their own choices about goals, texts, strategies, tools, and revisions. They monitor their progress, solve problems, and seek help when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students set a clear purpose, choose useful tools, and complete reading and writing tasks with limited prompting. They notice confusion, adjust their approach, and explain their decisions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think working independently means never asking for help. They may choose the easiest text, keep using a failed strategy, or submit a first draft without review.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and ask: "How will you understand this article and explain it to a ninth grader? Name two choices and explain why."

Ways to Teach It
Set out six varied texts and response tools; students choose one, state a purpose, and record why their choices fit.
Ask students to write about a time they got stuck while reading or writing, then name a strategy they could try next.
Play Strategy Match: teams pair reading and writing problems with useful tools, then defend the best choice.
Have students choose a real audience and write a book recommendation, school proposal, or how-to guide using resources they select.
