What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify claims, evidence, assumptions, reasoning, and author choices in written, spoken, or visual sources. They create annotations, charts, summaries, or responses that help them compare ideas and judge effectiveness.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately explain a text's main ideas, claims, evidence, assumptions, and choices. They create a clear analytical response or organizer that uses source details and stated criteria to make a judgment.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize a source without analyzing how its ideas work. They may also judge a text using personal agreement rather than evidence, reasoning, credibility, and bias.

How to Assess It

Give students a short editorial. Ask them to complete a claim-evidence-reasoning table, then write two sentences judging how well the evidence supports the main claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut apart a printed argument, then have pairs sort its claims, evidence, counterclaims, and assumptions into labeled columns.

  2. Ask students: Which idea is best supported, and what specific evidence makes it stronger than the alternatives?

  3. Run an evidence ranking game where teams order four quotations from strongest to weakest support and defend each placement.

  4. Compare two product reviews, then create a buyer's guide that rates each review's evidence, bias, and usefulness.
