What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine ideas in a text and create notes, charts, summaries, or responses that organize their thinking. They use those products to compare ideas and judge how well a text communicates or supports them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify key ideas and select details that help them examine those ideas. They create a clear chart, summary, annotation, or response and use it to make an evidence-based judgment.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell the text instead of analyzing how its ideas are developed. They may choose details without explaining their relevance or give an opinion without evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and a three-box exit ticket labeled Main Idea, Supporting Detail, and My Evaluation. Ask them to explain whether the detail supports the idea well.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips from two short articles, then have them sort claims and evidence into a comparison chart.
Ask students which author explains an idea more effectively, then require one quoted detail and a written explanation.
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with supporting details and remove details that are irrelevant.
Compare two school event flyers, decide which communicates better, and redesign the weaker flyer using clearer evidence and organization.
