What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make deliberate choices about tone, structure, detail, word choice, and evidence for a specific reader and situation. They explain how those choices help achieve the text's purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write the same core message differently for two audiences, then point to specific changes in craft. The finished text gives readers needed context and produces the intended response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat audience as an age label instead of considering knowledge, expectations, values, and likely questions. They may change only vocabulary, use an inappropriate tone, or add flashy techniques that do not serve the purpose.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write a 120-word request to move graduation rehearsal, aimed at the principal. Underline two craft choices and explain how each supports your purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs one campus announcement and two audience cards. Have them cut, rearrange, and rewrite details to create two targeted versions.

  2. Ask students to compare two openings and write which audience each suits, citing tone, detail, pacing, and assumed knowledge.

  3. Play Audience Switch: teams draw a purpose and reader card, revise one paragraph in five minutes, then defend three choices.

  4. Have students turn a school policy into both a senior email and a family FAQ, adjusting context, tone, and organization.
