What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create short texts with a particular reader and purpose in mind. They choose words, details, pictures, and punctuation that help that reader understand or respond.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name their reader and explain the text’s purpose. They choose fitting words, details, pictures, or punctuation and can explain one choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write only what they want to say without considering what the reader knows or needs. They may think craft means neat handwriting or detailed pictures rather than purposeful choices.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to write a two-sentence note inviting a kindergarten student to class. Have them circle one word or detail chosen for that reader.

Play Audience Match by sorting short notes under reader cards labeled friend, teacher, family member, and new student.
Create signs for the classroom library that help visiting students find, use, and return books.
