What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose transitions that show relationships such as contrast, cause, sequence, example, and qualification. They connect paragraphs and larger sections in ways that fit an essay, speech, or multimedia text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can revise a draft so each paragraph and section follows logically from the last. The student varies transition words, phrases, and sentences, then explains why each fits the relationship and communication mode.

Common Misconceptions

Students often repeat words like "however" or "therefore" instead of varying their choices. They may use a transition that signals the wrong relationship or leave abrupt jumps between paragraphs and sections.

How to Assess It

Give students three short argument paragraphs with missing transitions. Ask them to add two transitions, including one full sentence, and label the relationship each shows.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cut-up editorial to reorder, then have them add transition cards and explain how each choice connects the ideas.

  2. Ask students to write two bridges between the same paragraphs, one for a formal essay and one for a speech.

  3. Run a transition match game where teams pair paragraph cards with connectors showing contrast, cause, sequence, example, or qualification.

  4. Compare transitions in a newspaper editorial and a podcast transcript, then rewrite one bridge to fit the other communication mode.
