What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect ideas and media so readers or viewers can follow the message without confusion. They vary transitional words, phrases, sentences, headings, and visual cues to suit the text’s goal, audience, and format.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a clear path through an essay, presentation, video, or webpage. Their transitions accurately signal relationships among claims, evidence, sections, visuals, and audio while fitting the audience and format.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat transitions as isolated words such as “however” and “therefore,” rather than links between ideas, sections, and media. They may repeat one transition, choose a link that misstates the relationship, or add visuals without connecting them to the surrounding text.

How to Assess It

Give students three disconnected presentation slides and ask them to add two transitions that clarify the relationship between ideas and media. Have them label each relationship, such as contrast, cause, example, or sequence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed slide, image, and caption cards to arrange, then write transitions explaining how each part connects to the next.

  2. Ask students to compare two transitions for the same paragraph and explain which better fits a formal school board presentation.

  3. Play Transition Match by pairing idea cards with relationship cards, then award points for writing an accurate connecting sentence.

  4. Analyze transitions in a news webpage, product pitch, or public service video, then revise one weak link for the intended audience.
