What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and combine speech, visuals, audio, and written text to fit a clear goal and a specific audience. They select a form, such as a pitch, briefing, or story, and make the parts work together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A proficient student can explain why each format and presentation form suits the listeners and goal. The spoken words, images, data, and structure reinforce one message instead of repeating or distracting.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add images or video for decoration, without using them to clarify the message. They may choose the format they like rather than one suited to the audience. They also confuse using several media with integrating them, so each part feels separate.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: Convince the principal to add a quiet lunch space. In five minutes, students sketch one slide and write a 30-second persuasive pitch, then explain why each choice fits the principal.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a claim, chart, photo, and audio clip, then have them assemble a two-minute safety briefing for incoming ninth graders.
Ask students to write how a climate change presentation should differ for elementary students, local voters, and scientists.
Play Audience Switch: teams draw an audience card and revise an opening, visual, and evidence choice in three minutes.
Have students create a public service announcement about distracted driving using narration, a local statistic, and one purposeful image.
