What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students point to a picture, sentence, heading, or fact that answers a given question. They examine more than one source and explain a connection between the information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students locate a relevant detail in each of two sources. They point to the exact words or picture and explain how the details connect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a detail because it is interesting, not because it answers the question. They may name a whole book instead of pointing to a helpful picture or sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short texts about frogs. Ask, “How do frogs stay safe?” Students mark one helpful part in each text and state one connection.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two animal books and sticky notes, then have them mark one picture or sentence answering, “What does this animal eat?”
Read two weather texts, then ask, “What fact appears in both, and what new fact does each source add?”
Play Evidence Match: students pair question cards with sentence or picture cards, then explain why each match answers the question.
Compare a school lunch menu and nutrition poster, then identify which source answers, “Which lunch includes a fruit?”
