  Examine early attempts at communal living in American society and their effect on economic stability and societal prosperity.

What Students Need to Do

Students examine early American communities such as New Harmony, Brook Farm, and the Shakers. They identify why people joined, how members shared work or property, and what helped each community last or led it to end.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare two communities using specific facts, such as who owned property and how work was assigned. They can explain why one lasted longer than another without saying only that it succeeded or failed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every community shared everything in the same way. They may also assume a community that ended had no lasting ideas, or that everyone who joined agreed with every rule.

How to Assess It

Give students a short fact sheet on New Harmony and the Shakers. Ask: How did each group organize work, and what is one reason their outcomes differed?

   Give groups cards listing jobs, supplies, and community rules, then have them plan a shared household budget and explain their choices.

   Ask students to write: Would you join Brook Farm if you had to share farm work and teaching duties? Use two facts.

   Play a matching game with cards naming New Harmony, Brook Farm, and the Shakers and cards describing their rules and goals.

   Show a photo of Shaker furniture and ask students how the group's beliefs shaped objects people could buy.
