What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students revise a budget after income drops or an unexpected cost appears. They choose what to reduce, delay, replace, or cover with savings, then explain the tradeoffs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a budget and a new situation, a student correctly recalculates income, expenses, and the remaining balance. The revised plan is balanced and protects higher-priority needs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a credit card removes the cost or that fixed bills can simply disappear. They may cut expenses without recalculating the total or overlook how using savings affects later goals.
How to Assess It
- Give students a $2,000 income and $1,850 spending plan, then add a $200 income loss and a $250 repair. Ask them to submit a balanced revision and explain two choices.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs budget cards and surprise-event cards, then have them rearrange expense cards until the revised budget balances.
Ask students to write which expense they would cut first after losing work hours and defend their choice.
Play Budget Balance Relay, where teams draw income or expense changes and revise a running monthly budget.
Compare sample costs for phone plans, groceries, and transportation, then identify realistic cuts during a temporary income drop.
