What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect education, training, and work experience to the knowledge and skills a worker brings to a job. They explain how stronger skills can improve work speed, quality, or output and may lead to higher earnings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare a worker before and after training and identify gains in skills and output. They can explain why higher productivity may increase pay without claiming that it always will.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think human capital means tools, buildings, or money rather than a worker’s knowledge and skills. They may also assume every degree guarantees high pay or that productivity simply means working longer hours.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket about a bicycle mechanic who earns a repair certification. Ask students to explain how the certification could affect skills, productivity, and earnings.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs worker cards and training cards, then have them match each worker to a skill that would improve speed, quality, or output.
Ask students to write: How could a nursing assistant course change a worker’s tasks, output, and possible pay?
Play a before-and-after sorting game using job scenarios, with students labeling each change as skill, productivity, earnings, or none.
Compare local job postings for entry-level and certified roles, then list the added skills, duties, and pay differences.
