What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each leader to specific actions that supported independence. They explain how writing, organizing, diplomacy, military leadership, and public service helped the Patriot cause.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a leader from an event, quotation, or short source and explain that person’s contribution. They distinguish commonly confused figures, especially John Adams and Sam Adams.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think George Washington wrote the Declaration of Independence or that Benjamin Franklin served as president. They may confuse John Adams with Sam Adams or focus only on later work at the Constitutional Convention.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket naming John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. Students write one accurate Revolutionary contribution for each leader.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs biography and event cards for nine leaders, then have them build a timeline and defend each match.
Ask, "Which contribution most helped the Patriot cause succeed?" Students answer with two named leaders and specific evidence.
Play a clue game where teams identify the leader from three facts, then earn a bonus by naming the contribution.
Students plan a school cause campaign, assign organizer, writer, diplomat, fundraiser, and leader roles, then connect each role to a Revolutionary figure.
