What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how Africans, Native peoples, women, and children shaped colonial work, food, language, trade, family life, and community customs. They use specific examples and recognize that experiences differed by region, status, and time period.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect each group to clear contributions supported by evidence from a source. They also explain how unequal laws, forced labor, cooperation, and cultural exchange affected those contributions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each group as one uniform population or describe enslaved Africans only as laborers. They may also assume women and children had no public influence or portray Native peoples only through conflict.
How to Assess It
- Give students four source excerpts, one for each group. Ask them to name one contribution from each source and explain its effect on colonial life.

Have groups sort source cards about farming, crafts, trade, language, and family life by contributor, then defend two placements with evidence.
