What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine political, economic, and social changes under communist rule. They judge benefits, costs, and unintended results using evidence from several countries.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make a clear claim about an effect and support it with reliable evidence. They compare countries and explain why outcomes differed by place and time.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every communist government used identical policies or produced identical results. They may confuse communism with socialism or treat every event under communist rule as caused by communism.

How to Assess It

Give students a production graph and a short censorship law excerpt. Ask them to identify one economic effect and one political effect, citing evidence from each source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs source cards from the Soviet Union, China, and Cuba to sort by political, economic, and social effects.

  2. Write a claim about whether one communist policy helped or harmed citizens, then support it with two source details.

  3. Play Evidence Match by pairing policy cards, such as collectivization or censorship, with documented outcomes and explaining each match.

  4. Compare a current trade or population graph from Cuba or China with a historical policy and identify one possible lasting effect.
