What Students Need to Do: Students examine laws, policies, statistics, and firsthand accounts from communist governments. They judge how government control affected civil liberties, voting, work, production, and access to goods.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make a clear claim and support it with accurate evidence from named countries. They explain that effects varied by place and time, rather than treating every communist government as identical.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse communist ideas with the actions of every government that claimed the label. They may assume elections always meant meaningful choice or that state-run economies affected all people in the same way.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose one policy from the Soviet Union, Maoist China, or Cuba. Explain one effect on freedom or participation and one economic effect, citing two facts.

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort source cards from the Soviet Union, Maoist China, and Cuba into freedoms, political participation, and economic effects.
Ask students to write: Which government policy changed daily life most, and what evidence supports your judgment?
Play an evidence relay where teams match policies to consequences, then challenge one match with a source-based correction.
Compare a ration card, state newspaper, and factory production target with modern choices about buying, speaking, voting, and working.
