What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions accept deposits, protect money, make loans, and process payments. They connect these services to business investment, consumer spending, and economic growth.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can trace how deposited money may fund a loan for a household or business. They can explain how lending, interest, and payment services support buying, selling, and business expansion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think banks simply store each customer’s cash or give loans from unlimited funds. They may also confuse banks with government agencies or assume all financial institutions offer identical services.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit prompt: “A bakery needs money for a new oven. Explain how a financial institution could help and how the loan may affect the local economy.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups play money, deposit slips, and loan request cards, then have them run a classroom bank that channels deposits into business loans.

  2. Ask students to write: How would local businesses and shoppers be affected if banks stopped accepting deposits or making loans?

  3. Play a matching game linking deposits, loans, interest, and payment services to effects on households, businesses, and the wider economy.

  4. Compare checking, savings, and small-business loan pages from two local institutions, then identify how each service supports market exchange.
