What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match major rulers and conquerors to their time periods, dynasties, actions, and legacies. They explain how each person affected Chinese government, territory, or society.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a name, image, or clue, students identify Qin Shi Huang, Han Wudi, Empress Wu, or Genghis Khan. They explain one major action and why it mattered in Chinese history.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat titles such as Shi Huangdi and Wudi as personal names or place all four people in the same era. They may also claim Genghis Khan conquered all of China, though later Mongol forces completed that conquest.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with four names and four achievements to match. Then ask, “Which person had the greatest effect on China, and what fact supports your answer?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs name, dynasty, action, and legacy cards for Qin Shi Huang, Han Wudi, Empress Wu, and Genghis Khan to sort.
Ask: Which figure changed China most, and what two facts support your choice?
Play Who Am I with clues about a dynasty, policy, conquest, or achievement, then have teams identify and explain the figure.
Open a museum website featuring one figure, then have students write a two-sentence display caption explaining why that person is remembered.
