What Students Need to Do: Students explain how Chinese rulers claimed Heaven supported their right to govern. They connect good rule, disorder, rebellion, and a change of dynasty in a repeating cycle.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain how the Zhou used the idea to justify replacing the Shang. They can apply the same reasoning to a later dynasty and support it with evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a ruler kept Heaven’s approval forever or inherited it automatically. They may confuse it with the European divine right of kings. They may also treat disasters as proof rather than signs people interpreted politically.
How to Assess It: Give students four terms: corrupt ruler, natural disaster, rebellion, new dynasty. Ask them to order the terms and explain the cycle in two sentences.

Lesson moves

Give groups event cards about a fictional dynasty and have them arrange the cards into a complete dynastic cycle.
Ask students to write how Zhou leaders might persuade Shang subjects that a change in rule was justified.
Play a card sort where students label each event as gaining, keeping, or losing Heaven’s approval.
Compare the idea with a modern government losing public support, then list one similarity and one difference.
