What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain beliefs such as Brahman, dharma, karma, reincarnation, and moksha, plus practices such as prayer, offerings, and pilgrimage. They describe the varna hierarchy and explain how birth, work, and social duties shaped people's lives.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a short scenario to show how dharma, karma, reincarnation, and moksha connect. The student can label the four varnas, identify communities placed outside that framework, and explain limits tied to birth.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat karma as instant luck or punishment, rather than the result of actions across lives. They may think caste was freely chosen, based only on wealth, or identical across India. They may also confuse Hindu beliefs with Buddhist beliefs.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In four sentences, explain how dharma, karma, and reincarnation could shape one person's choices in ancient India. Then label the four varnas and note who was placed outside the framework.
