What Students Need to Do: Students trace Indo-Aryan and other tribal movements into and across the Indian subcontinent. They explain how migration and cultural mixing shaped languages, Vedic beliefs, settlement, and social organization.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can locate major migration routes on a map and place them after the Indus Valley era. The student can connect migration to Sanskrit, Vedic traditions, and the developing varna system.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Aryan as a modern racial label or assume one army conquered all of India at once. They may also think migrants completely replaced existing peoples or created the modern caste system immediately.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank map and ask them to draw one migration route, then name and explain two effects on Indian civilization.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a blank map, yarn, and evidence cards to trace migration routes and link each route to a cultural change.
Prompt students: How can newcomers change a society without completely replacing it? Require two examples from ancient India.
Run a cause-and-effect card sort matching migrations with Sanskrit, Vedic beliefs, horse use, settlement patterns, and social organization.
Have students examine an Indo-European language family chart and circle English and Indian words that share ancient roots.
