What Students Need to Do: Students identify how an ancient group shared land, labor, goods, or responsibilities. They explain how those practices affected order, status, daily life, and power within that society.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use evidence from a source to describe a specific communal practice and one result. They can compare two societies without treating every form of sharing as identical.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume communal systems ended all private ownership or made everyone equal. They may also confuse limited ancient sharing practices with modern state communism or overlook coercion and social hierarchy.
How to Assess It: Give students a short source about shared meals in Sparta. Ask, “What was shared, and how could this practice strengthen or limit Spartan society?”

Lesson moves

Give groups resource cards about Sparta and the Essenes, then have them sort each card into shared goods, shared labor, rules, and effects.
Ask students to write: “When can sharing resources strengthen a society, and when can it limit individual choice?”
Play a matching game in which students pair communal practices with likely effects, then defend each match using a source detail.
Have students examine a public library or community garden, naming one shared resource, one benefit, and one limit without calling it communism.
