What Students Need to Do: Students identify Abraham and Moses and explain the Israelites' belief in one God, their covenant with God, and the Ten Commandments. They compare these beliefs with those of nearby Egyptians and Mesopotamians, who worshipped many gods.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain why Abraham and Moses matter in Israelite history. Given short descriptions of three belief systems, they can name one similarity and one difference without saying that all ancient peoples worshipped the same gods.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Moses wrote the Ten Commandments himself rather than receiving them from God in Israelite tradition. They may also assume Egyptians and Mesopotamians worshipped one god because both had religious rules.
How to Assess It: On an exit ticket, ask: Who was Moses, and how did Israelite beliefs about God differ from Egyptian beliefs? Ask students to answer in two sentences.

Lesson moves

Give pairs cards labeled Abraham, Moses, covenant, and Ten Commandments; have them match each card to a brief description.
Ask students to write two sentences: How did belief in one God set the Israelites apart from nearby peoples?
Play a sorting round with six belief cards; students place each under Israelites, Egyptians, or Both and explain one choice.
Show a map of the eastern Mediterranean; have students mark Israel, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, then trace where these peoples lived.
