Common Misconceptions: Students may think judges create laws or that every court case involves a crime and jury. They may also think courts always punish someone instead of resolving disagreements.
How to Assess It: Give students a dispute and a short law. Ask them to write what the court must decide and how its ruling could resolve the case.

Lesson moves

Run a mock court using a playground dispute, witness cards, a school rule, and a student judge who writes a ruling.
Ask students to write: Why should both sides speak before a judge makes a decision?
