What Students Need to Do: Students connect problems under the Articles of Confederation to solutions written into the Constitution. They describe how the Constitution set up branches, divided powers, limited government, and gained authority through ratification.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a weakness, such as Congress lacking power to collect taxes, and explain the constitutional solution. The student can also explain how divided powers help prevent abuse.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence or think it created independence from Britain. They may also think the president controls every branch or that the federal government received unlimited power.
How to Assess It: Ask students to answer: Name one problem under the Articles of Confederation and explain how the Constitution addressed it. Require one specific problem and one matching solution.

Lesson moves

Give pairs problem cards from the Articles and Constitution solution cards, then have them match each pair and explain their reasoning.
Ask students to write: Why would the founders replace a weak national government but still limit the new government's power?
Run a three-branch sorting relay using cards labeled with powers such as making laws, enforcing laws, and interpreting laws.
Compare the Constitution to classroom rules that assign jobs, set limits, and explain how group decisions are made.
