What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students predict what someone might buy after comparing prices, ads, friends’ choices, and peer pressure. They explain which factor influenced the choice and why.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students examine a shopping situation and make a reasonable prediction about the buyer’s choice. They support it with evidence about price or social influence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the lowest-priced item is always chosen or that ads always change a buyer’s mind. They may also confuse a friend’s example with direct peer pressure.
How to Assess It
- Give students two snack choices with prices and this detail: “Your friends say everyone buys Snack B.” Ask which snack the buyer might choose and why.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a mock store with price tags, colorful ads, and peer comments, then have students choose one item and explain their decision.
Ask students to write about a time an ad or another person made them want something and how price affected their choice.
Play Choice Detective by reading shopping scenarios while teams identify the strongest influence: price, advertising, others’ choices, or peer pressure.
Compare two real grocery advertisements and predict which product a family might buy based on price, ad wording, and family preferences.
