What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify things people would like to have or do. They sort examples by whether the want is met by an item, someone’s work, or an activity done for enjoyment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify examples such as a book, a car wash, and a movie. They can explain how each example meets a person’s want.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every want is a physical object. They may label a haircut as a good, or think leisure only means doing nothing.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Maya wants a bicycle, a haircut, and an afternoon at a skating rink. Label each as a good, service, or leisure activity and explain your choices.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups picture cards showing toys, haircuts, and park visits, then have students sort them into good, service, and leisure activity columns.
Ask students to write about one recent want and explain whether a good, service, or leisure activity satisfied it.
Play category corners: read an example, then students move to the good, service, or leisure corner and defend their choice.
Use a local mall directory to find one store, one service business, and one leisure place that could satisfy wants.
