What Mastery Looks Like: Students give at least two clear reasons for putting Florida's government rules in writing. They use examples such as defining the branches, limiting power, and protecting citizens' rights.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse Florida's Constitution with the U.S. Constitution or treat it as a list of everyday laws. They may also think one governor wrote it or that it can never be changed.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket: “Why does Florida have a written constitution? Give two reasons and one example of what it establishes or protects.”

Lesson moves

Give groups cards naming powers, limits, rights, and branches, then have them sort each under a reason for writing a constitution.
Ask students to write: “What problems could happen if Florida's government rules were not written down?”
Play Constitution Match by pairing purpose cards, such as limiting power, with example cards, such as courts reviewing government actions.
Show a school handbook and ask students to compare its written rules with the purposes of Florida's Constitution.
