What Students Need to Do

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can connect a named technology to at least two specific results. For example, railroads moved people and crops faster, helped towns grow, and changed land and habitats.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think technology means only modern electronics. They may assume every change was positive or happened immediately. They may name an invention without explaining its effect on Florida.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose a steamboat, railroad, or telegraph. Explain how it changed Florida's economy or settlement, then name one other effect.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a Florida map, yarn, and town cards, then have them build railroad routes and predict changes in travel and trade.

  2. Ask students to write: How could a railroad change jobs, settlement, and the environment in one Florida town?

  3. Play cause-and-effect match with cards for steamboats, railroads, telegraphs, faster travel, larger markets, new towns, and habitat loss.

  4. Compare an old Florida rail map with a current highway map, then identify communities that grew along each transportation route.
