What Students Need to Do: Students observe objects in photos and during safe outdoor viewing. They compare how large each object looks from the ground, using words such as bigger, smaller, or about the same. They record comparisons with drawings or simple labels.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare two objects and state which appears bigger or smaller from Earth. The student can draw the comparison and explain that looking small does not always mean being small.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a star is actually tiny because it looks like a dot. They may assume the Sun and Moon are the same size because they can look similar, or confuse nearby objects with larger objects.
How to Assess It: Show a photo with the Moon, a cloud, and a distant airplane. Ask, “Which looks biggest, which looks smallest, and are you describing visible size or actual size?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs matching paper circles; one student moves a circle farther away while the other describes how its visible size changes.
Show photos of the Moon, stars, clouds, and airplanes; ask students to draw two and finish, “The ___ looks bigger than the ___.”
Play a card sort where students place object photos under Looks Big or Looks Small, then explain one choice.
On the playground, compare a nearby tree and a distant building, then sketch how large each object looks.
