What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a process forms one or more new substances. They use observations such as gas production, precipitate formation, temperature change, and lasting color change as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify familiar changes and support each choice with evidence. They explain that a change in size, shape, or state does not change a substance's identity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every color change, bubble, or temperature change proves a new substance formed. They may also assume all physical changes are reversible and all chemical changes are permanent.
How to Assess It
- Give students three cases: cutting aluminum foil, rusting a nail, and mixing vinegar with baking soda. Ask them to classify each and justify one answer with evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations for tearing paper, melting ice, dissolving salt, and mixing vinegar with baking soda, then have students classify each change.
Ask students to explain whether baking a cake and slicing a cake involve the same kind of change.
Play a card sort using event cards and evidence cards, with teams defending any disputed placements.
Have students examine food preparation steps and identify where ingredients keep their identities or form new substances.
