What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe a historical scientific explanation, the evidence that challenged it, and the explanation that followed. They connect the change to specific observations, experiments, or new interpretations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the earlier idea, cite the new evidence, and explain how scientific thinking changed. The student shows that revisions are based on evidence, not opinion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think scientific knowledge never changes, or that one new claim immediately replaces an accepted explanation. They may also assume earlier scientists ignored evidence or were simply foolish.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “In three sentences, explain how evidence from seafloor spreading changed scientists’ views about moving continents.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups magnetic seafloor stripe maps and evidence cards, then have them build a case for moving tectonic plates.
Ask students to write: “Why was germ theory a stronger explanation for disease than the miasma theory?”
Run a card-matching race connecting older ideas, new evidence, and revised explanations from four historical science cases.
Compare a nineteenth-century miasma poster with a modern germ-transmission diagram, then list the health choices each model would support.
