What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how evidence, peer criticism, repeated testing, and independent confirmation shape scientific knowledge. They describe why accepted explanations can change when stronger evidence appears.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace a claim from an initial study through peer review, replication, and possible revision. They can explain why agreement based on repeated evidence is stronger than one scientist’s opinion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think one successful experiment proves a claim forever. They may also think scientific debate is based on personal opinion, or that consensus is simply a majority vote.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: “Two research teams get different results. What should the science community do before accepting either claim?” Require three specific steps.

Ways to Teach It
In teams, test one paper-helicopter claim, pool results, challenge methods, and decide whether the combined evidence supports it.
Discuss: “If scientists disagree, can scientific knowledge still be reliable?” Require one example involving evidence, criticism, and repeated testing.
Sort fictional study cards into “needs confirmation,” “supported,” or “revised,” then defend each placement with evidence.
Compare news reports about a changing health recommendation, then identify how new studies and scientific review led to the change.
